Make MacOS X 10.3.2 start faster

15th January, 2004

There is an interesting thread at Apple Discussions about improving the long startup time of the latest update to MacOS X Panther, 10.3.2.
Quoting one of the posts from the discussion:

"BootCacheControl is called from /etc/rc twice:

- BootCacheControl
- BootCacheControl tag

both times its called using a shell variable set in /etc/rc which originally points to /System/Library/Extensions/BootCache.kext/Contents/Resources/BootCacheControl (and if this would not exist it would get changed to /usr/sbin/BootCacheControl.)

But there is another call from the loginwindow process later:

- /usr/sbin/BootCacheControl autostop 15

Unfortunately /usr/sbin/BootCacheControl does not exist on a(ll) updated 10.3.2 system. The copy command takes care of that."

If you know your way around the Terminal, you can apply the fix easily by typing

sudo ln -s /System/Library/Extensions/BootCache.kext/Contents/Resources/BootCacheControl /usr/sbin/BootCacheControl

in one line. After two restarts, your startup time should be greatly improved. The hint also found it's way to MacOSXHints, a valuable resource for hacking osx.
