All Your Rights Are Belong To Us

4th April, 2001

This might be old news to some of you but I figured it was important enough to be posted here as well. It's about Microsoft and it's about your rights (I couldn't resist the title...). At Slashdot there's an article about how Microsoft's Passport Terms Of Use states that by using the service you grant Microsoft the right to "use, modify, copy, distribute, transmit, publicly display, publicly perform, reproduce, publish, sublicense, create derivative works from, transfer, or sell any such communication". It appears that Hotmail is also affected by this as discussed in the article. The news can also be found at The Register, in fact that seems to be the originating post.

While it should come as no surprise that Microsoft shouldn't be trusted at all, the extent to which this is true is amazing. Anything posted with the use of Hotmail becomes copyright of Microsoft! I can't believe those suckers. You can read the Passport TOU and there's a nice explanation of the matter here.

Had enough of Microsoft allready? Alternative browsers can be found at Netscape, Opera, iCab (only mac) and then there's always our ol'skol' favourite Lynx. Emailers would include Eudora and Pegasus. Comments are welcome.
