Today it was announced that the human genome has been completely analyzed. Within the next few decades, we should see advances in the development of clearly inherited diseases. A cure for - or understanding of - cancer is however unlikely in the near future, as it will probably require a better understanding of how the genes interact with each other and with the environment.
On a longer timescale, the ability to compare and analyze the genes of different species will be of invaluable importance to the understanding of how the genes are intercoupled and how they combine to form an individual.
